Egg-free vs vegan vs free-from: what’s the difference?

• Egg-free: No egg is used as an ingredient.
• Vegan: No animal-derived ingredients are intentionally used (including milk and egg).
• Free-from [allergen]: Guaranteed free from specific allergens, produced under strict controls.

It’s important to note that “vegan” doesn’t automatically mean free from allergen traces. Always check labeling and ask your baker for clear allergen information.

The UK’s 14 major allergens

In the UK, these are the regulated allergens:
celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soya, sulphur dioxide, and tree nuts.

At iCakes, we handle several of these in our bakery. That’s why we’re transparent about possible traces and use Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) such as “may contain nuts” where needed.
